My 1st Big Problem
The first of my two largest problems with the current team is Rudy Tomjanovich. I love Rudy to death. He is one of a few TRUE Rockets. He is a good player's coach. He has spent his ENTIRE pro career as a Houston Rocket, and I hopes he finishes it as one. But....the truth be told, Rudy T. is a very good assistant coach at best. Now, I don't know who would be a bette coach for the Rockets, but I don't have ALL the answers. There are three things that Rudy T. does very poorly. The way he substitutes players during the flow of the game is his biggest fault. He tends to "ice" a hot shooting player by "resting" him for a quarter or so, totally forgetting whoever that might be. Secondly, he seems to leave our second-rate guards in far too long when they are obviously playing terribly. We should've never had less than two of the "Big 4" (Hakeem, Drexler, Willis, & Barkley) in the game at ANY time, unless we have the game totally in control. (ie 15+ lead) But Rudy seems not to realize the importance of this. The last major flaw Rudy T. has is his TOTAL inability to draw up any kind of play after a time out. I would venture to say that we have the lowest shooting and scoring average and the worst defense to boot after time-outs. If teams had unlimited time-outs we'd lose every game 350-0. It's an embarrasment.
*(Oddly enough, I actually feel more confident with Rudy as our head coach after this season. He was not the main problem. I feel we were at a disadvantage with an inexperienced backcourt. There also seemed to be a problem with players giving it all. Heart, intensity, desire all seemed to be our biggest problems in 1999. Of course, some may say that a coach should be able to get these out of his players, and I agree to some degree. But, I'm not ready to see Rudy go just yet. One big reason to keep Rudy for a few more years is that there's no one else out there that is better.)
